Unveiling the Majesty of 1990 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard: A Legendary Napa Valley Icon
"Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet was long the most collectible wine made in the United States … the new breed of "cult" California wines”

Joe Heitz - Iconic Winemaker since 1961
Napa Valley winemaker Joe Heitz, whose Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon became a symbol of excellence in California wine and helped catapult Napa Valley wine to international fame.
For many wine lovers, the Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet was long the most collectible wine made in the United States, up into the 1990s, when auction prices skyrocketed for the new breed of "cult" California wines. Vintages such as 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1974 are considered by many to be among the finest wines made in that era, at a time when few outside northern California knew much about Napa Valley wine.
The wines of Heitz
Heitz produced many benchmark wines during his 40-year career. But he was best known for his Cabernets -- particularly the Martha's Vineyard bottling and its signature minty currant aromas -- which came from a 34-acre vineyard in Oakville owned by Tom and Martha May. Critical Acclaim:
"One of California's benchmark Cabernets, this has lovely depth and intensity. Marked by mint and currant flavors with a cedary accent, all turning smooth and supple. Firm tannins on the finish." JL for WS Apr 1995
Wine Spectator - 1990 Heitz Martha's Vineyard
"Martha's Vineyard has all the things you look for in a great wine. It earns high marks for its distinctive and deliberate style, its character, richness, complexity, depth, balance, longevity and consistency.
It's the consistency of style and the complexity the wine develops with age that sets the Martha's Vineyard Cabernet apart from many of its contemporaries. Having tasted most of the Heitz wines on numerous occasions, I'm hard-pressed to pick favorites. The '68 is considered a classic, very rich and concentrated." JL for WS Nov 2003
