Eisele Vineyard
First planted in 1886, Eisele Vineyard has become a treasured Napa Valley site in Calistoga. The now-famous Eisele Vineyard has been celebrated for decades, passing through the hands of big names such as Joseph Phelps, Araujo Estate, and now François Pinault (famous for owning Chateau Latour amongst other world-famous estates) who acquired the estate in 2013.
Transforming the vineyard to Grand Cru levels, the Pinaults put Hélène Mingot and Antoine Donnedieu de Vabres in charge of the winemaking. For the last 10 years, the duo has concocted some of Napa's most spectacular wines, with the recent addition of the 21-acre Frediani Vineyard adding to this spectacle. After the 2013 transition over to François Pinault, critics have been thrilled with the quality across all styles:
- "Supple and beautiful...Hard not to drink now" - JS96, on 2016 Altagracia
- "Intense aromas of black fruit, cocoa powder, black olives, dried violets, tar & cigar box...full-bodied with firm, chalky tannins. Incredible intensity & purity of fruit with gorgeous breadth & depth. Superb" - JS97, on 2018 Altagracia
- "All is proceeding brilliantly at the Eisele Vineyard —so the greatness from this fabulous terroir continues unabated" - Robert Parker on Eisele Vineyard
Eisele Vineyard has quickly garnered a reputation as "an utterly classic Napa Cabernet," as famed critic Jeb Dunnuck noted on the 2019 vintage. Routinely scoring in the high 90s and receiving perfect scores, Eisele Vineyards has catapulted to global stardom in the past decades, showing that each of the estate's wines is a magnificent choice. Eisele Wines History
Until the early 19th century, the land that is now Eisele Vineyard was occupied by the Wappo, a Native American tribe known for land conservation and gardening. It was in 1841 when the land was acquired as part of the 18,000-acre Mexican land grant where cattle and horses grazed the land, and large amounts of wheat were grown. After 40 years of these operations, Napa pioneer Jackson G. Randall and his business partner, Charles Nathan Pickett, began the first known wine estate from Eisele Vineyard, planting zinfandel and riesling. Surviving the phylloxera outbreak of the late 19th century, Prohibition, and the Great Depression, Eisele Vineyards remained firmly in the hands of Pickett and his family, until 1964 when Milton and Barbra Eisele purchased the land, forever transforming the vineyard into one of Napa's most historic sites.
Eisele Vineyard Terroir
Eisele Vineyard is located on the northern edge of Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga. Protected by the Palisades Mountains and Chalk Hill Gap, the 38-acre pocket of land is blessed by cool breezes and well-drained soils. As Simmons Creek and a small river flow from the east, volcanic cobbly soils are spread from the Palisades Mountains, making the soil well-drained. With the vineyard lying on a gentle slope, the vines produce low yields of highly concentrated fruit.
The vineyard is divided into 13 blocks and over 40 sub-blocks, as nearly three-quarters of this land is planted with cabernet sauvignon. The fruit is thick-skinned and intensely flavored, leading to wines of complexity, concentration, and an illustrious aging ability. Furthermore, the organic and biodynamic winemaking plays a large role in creating exceptional wines. By opting to keep from using artificial fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, Eisele wine stays true to the natural terroir. The estate holds certifications in the Napa Green Land and Napa Green Winery programs, underlying their commitment to preserving and protecting the land. Also, with over 500 olive trees planted across the vineyard, the land holds a natural connection to its pre-wine conditions.
Eisele Cabernet and Altagracia Steal the Show
The estate's flagship label is the Eisele Vineyard cabernet sauvignon, one of Napa's most highly acclaimed and beloved bottles. Created with small hints of cabernet franc and petit verdot, the wine has been marked with "amazing freshness and energy, finishing long and layered" by critic Lisa Perroti-Brown. Similarly, the second wine, Altagracia wine, is a Bordeaux-style blend that challenges some of Napa's top bottles. With only a little over a decade in production, the future looks bright for Eisele's second label.
