Cos d’Estournel: A Bordeaux Masterpiece Worth Savoring

Cos d'Estournel needs little to no introduction as it has become one of the most esteemed properties on Bordeaux's left bank in recent years. This "Super Second" estate, under the ownership of Michel Reybier since 2000, has solidified its position as a force to be reckoned with. Critically acclaimed and adored by wine enthusiasts, Cos d'Estournel has continuously raised the bar, producing two 100-point wines since Reybier's acquisition, including the exceptional triple 100-point 2016 vintage.

The Chateau Today

While Cos d'Estournel has long been recognized as one of Bordeaux's top producers, its standing has reached new heights over the past two decades. This transformation can be attributed to Michel Reybier's unwavering attention to detail and pursuit of perfection. In 2008, Reybier undertook a complete renovation of the cellar, focusing on flexibility and minimal intervention. The remarkable outcome includes 84 gravity-fed vats of various capacities, precisely designed to accommodate the complexity of their vineyards which features 19 different soil types. This modernized cellar allows Cos d'Estournel to vinify each plot individually, thereby exerting greater influence over the final wine.

The results of this cellar upgrade have been nothing short of impressive, with Cos d'Estournel consistently earning scores of 98 points or higher since 2014. Yet, it's not just the cellar that has propelled this monumental success. Situated near the Pauillac border, neighboring the renowned Chateau Lafite, Cos d'Estournel boasts exceptional terroir within St-Estephe. The vineyard, featuring 19 diverse soil types, is predominantly gravel, which perfectly suits Bordeaux's signature grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines at Cos d'Estournel average 40 years in age, with certain plots dating back over a century.

The Origin

The presence of century-old vines comes as no surprise, considering Cos d'Estournel's rich history in the region, dating back to 1811. Its namesake, Louis Gaspard d'Estournel, was the original owner who boldly sold wines directly to consumers worldwide, including a significant portion to India. This connection with India profoundly influenced the architectural design of the Chateau that we admire today.

Cos d'Estournel became one of the first Bordeaux estates to bypass the negociant system by directly bottling, labeling, and selling their wine. Louis Gaspard continued this direct-to-consumer approach until his passing in 1852. Subsequent owners fortuitously embraced the negociant system, leading to the estate's inclusion in the prestigious 1855 classification.

Elevating the Standard

The extensive history of Cos d'Estournel is filled with captivating anecdotes about one of Bordeaux's most unique estates. However, it is in the modern era, under Michel Reybier's guidance, that Cos d'Estournel is reaching new heights while building upon its storied legacy. With its impressive trajectory, Cos d'Estournel remains one of the finest Chateaux Bordeaux has to offer. Whether you seek a wise wine investment or a cherished indulgence, acquiring a bottle of Cos d'Estournel is highly recommended.

When you consider all the remarkable aspects that set Cos d'Estournel apart, combined with its recent achievements, it's truly remarkable that these bottles remain within reach for consumers at a relatively affordable price. The level of consistency demonstrated by Cos d'Estournel since Reybier assumed ownership of the estate is nothing short of remarkable. Esteemed critic Jeb Dunnuck, whose profession revolves around tasting the world's finest wines, described Cos d'Estournel's 2022 vintage from the barrel as "one of the finest wines to ever pass my lips." Such high praise from a respected expert speaks volumes.
