Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
The highly esteemed wine estate is located on the Left Bank of Bordeaux’s Haut-Médoc wine region in the Pauillac appellation. Located on the Southern end of Pauillac, Pichon-Baron is neighbors with other famous wineries, Château Latour and Château Pichon-Comtesse de Lalande. Though this producer is considered a second-growth vineyard, top wines from this region can rival first-growth wineries, and the grand vin is no exception.
1989 Vintage
The 1989 vintage, with a rating of Legendary, is said to be one of the best vintages of Bordeaux and is at the perfect age to enjoy. With the Merlot fruit having an extra edge in this vintage, the grand vin excelled in its flavor profile. The 1989 showcases aromas of plum, blackcurrants, and black truffles accompanied by a full-bodied and dramatic finish on the palate. Documenting a tasting of 173 wines of the 1989 Vintage, James Suckling writes, "Paul Pontallier, the technical director of first-growth Château Margaux, turned to me and said, "I am sure that the 1989s will be able to age as well as this '28 Léoville-Poyferré. The ['89] vintage is a great year, just like '28 or '47."" I have personally, not tasted a 1928 or 1947 wine, but now you have the opportunity to drink and collect what the Legendary 1989, which Paul Pontallier calls a great year! 1989 Bordeaux: Better Than 1982
Château Pichon-Longueville was originally one estate but split into two in 1850. Baron Raoul Pichon de Longueville inherited what is now Pichon-Baron, and his three sisters inherited Pichon-Comtesse de Lalande. Since 1987, Pichon-Baron has been owned by French insurance company, AXA Millésimes.

Critical Acclaim
"This is glossy and sophisticated, with so much graphite, ink, pencil shavings, blackberries, blackcurrants and blackberry leaves on the nose. Classy and powerful with very sleek tannins. Dark chocolate and blackcurrants. So long and deep. Drink or hold." JS Jan 2023
Wine Spectator - #1 Wine of the Year "Youthful and gorgeous. Hedonistic. Superyoung ruby, black color. Masses of ripe fruit. Blackberry, cassis and spices. Full-bodied and very soft, with round, caressing tannins and a deliciously fresh berry, plum aftertaste. Hard not to drink it now. Best after 2005." JS for WS 1992
James Suckling - 99 Points ~ 1989 Pichon Baron
"The 2005 Pichon-Longueville Baron is another concentrated, full-bodied 2005 that’s starting to drink well. Cassis, black cherries, tobacco leaf, cedar and classic Pauillac lead-pencil characteristics all emerge from this ripe, sexy, surprisingly rounded effort that has a stacked mid-palate and sweet, polished tannin. It’s impressive today but is going to cruise for another two to three decades." JD Dec 2017
