Domaine Bonneau du Martray: The Star of Corton Hill
Nestled at the base of Côte de Beaune's iconic Corton Hill, Bonneau du Martray has established a long-standing reputation for exceptional Grand Cru expressions of Corton and Corton-Charlemagne. The estate’s vineyard land boasts a rich history, having been owned by Charlemagne, 8th Century King of the Franks, before being bestowed upon the Abbey of St. Andoche in Saulieu in 775 CE, eventually coming under the ownership of the Bonneau-Véry family after the French Revolution.
Bonneau du Martray Wines: Commitment to Grand Cru from Corton Hill
Today, Bonneau du Martray is one of the largest landowners of the esteemed Corton-Charlemagne with a rare contiguous 23.5-acre parcel, the most extensive single holding within the Grand Cru. The estate further holds the unique distinction of being the only Burgundy house to solely focus on Grand Cru bottlings, a distinction it shared with DRC until 2008 with DRC’s release of Cuvée Duvault Blochet, a Premier Cru. This level of commitment to only the finest vineyard sites solidifies Bonneau du Martray’s standing as a true benchmark producer of Côte d'Or Grand Cru wines.
Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne: The Pinnacle of Chardonnay
As stewards of this prized Burgundian landscape, Bonneau du Martray has committed to meticulous standards such as hand-harvesting and biodynamic farming to ensure the best quality grapes in every harvest. The rocky marl and limestone soils of the Grand Cru vineyards consistently yields pristine and powerful Chardonnay, drawing comparisons to the acclaimed offerings from other renowned producers, such as Domaine Leflaive's Bâtard-Montrachet, Domaine Coche-Dury's Meursault-Perrières, and Domaine Leroy's Montrachet. The neighboring Corton-Charlemagne plots from which legendary Coche-Dury sources its Chardonnay comes at an exponential premium compared to the outstanding source of Bonneau du Martray, emphasizing the true value available to consumers in these wines.
Excellence Loves Company
Screaming Eagle owner Stan Kroenke took note of this estate's renown and purchased a majority stake in Bonneau du Martray in 2017. The acquisition brought fresh expertise and resources to the estate, helping to ensure its legacy would continue to thrive. Impressed with the provenance of the land, the celebrated Domaine Romanée-Conti entered into a leasing agreement with Bonneau du Martray in 2018 in order to expand their portfolio to include Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne. As the two estates subscribe to the same rigorous philosophy of biodynamics, the arrangement was a natural fit and a perfect juxtaposition of some of Burgundy’s finest Chardonnay expressions.
Burgundy's 2017 Vintage: Harmonious & Classic
The 2017 vintage was a beautiful year for White Burgundy to excel, characterized by wines of longevity and classic balance. James Suckling awarded the 2017 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne an impressive 97 points, describing its "very complex nose of flint, dried pear, Amalfi lemon and fresh ginger [that] pulls you inexorably into this super focused and racy Corton-Charlemagne," furthering that the wine has “so much energy and vitality it should age very well.”
