Establishing Identities
Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, affectionately known as PYCM among insiders, has swiftly emerged as a premier producer of white wines in Burgundy. While their reputation has been built on their reductive, age-worthy whites, their red wines are equally captivating. In truth, this estate embodies two distinct domaines: Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey and Caroline Morey, each bearing the name of its respective founder. Pierre-Yves and Caroline hail from separate lineages deeply rooted in Burgundian tradition. In 2006, they converged, inheriting unique vineyards and parcels from their families, blazing a trail of their own, and crafting wines that echoed their unique vision.
Where Tradition and Innovation Meet
To authentically showcase and honor their inherited vineyards, Pierre-Yves's family vineyards are bottled under the PYCM label, while Caroline's family vineyards bear the name Caroline Morey. Yet, it's essential to note that not every PYCM wine is crafted by Pierre-Yves, and not every Caroline Morey wine bears Caroline's touch. His whites undergo barrel fermentation in 350-liter barrels, a departure from the conventional 228-liter barrels. These larger barrels offer 50% more volume while imparting only 10% more oak influence to the wine. The philosophy behind the 350-liter barrels lies in their ability to infuse the wine with increased freshness and CO2 while tempering the oak influence. The wines undergo malolactic fermentation at their own pace and are aged in barrels for a minimum of 18 months.
A Family Journey
Pierre-Yves's journey began at his father's estate, Domaine Marc-Colin. Driven by a desire to explore beyond family tradition, he created a small negociant business in 2001, purchasing enough fruit to craft six barrels of wine—a momentous first step on his path to becoming a Burgundian great. By 2006, Pierre-Yves embarked on his own path, breaking away from the family domaine and taking with him 15 acres of cherished vines. Caroline contributed additional parcels from her family's estate, Domaine Jean-Marc Morey.
