2005 Perrot-Minot, Vosne-Romanee, Aux Champs Perdrix Vieilles Vignes, Bottle (750ml)

From a 50-year-old vineyard above La Tache, the 2005 Vosne-Romanee Champs Perdrix Vieilles Vignes ? bottled the week before I tasted ? offers aromas of cinnamon-, allspice-, and flower-scented ripe black cherry; a fabulously pure, refined, juicy black fruit concentration on the palate with subtly bitter undertones of fruit skin and dark chocolate; and a remarkably tactile sense of spice, chalk and fruit skin in its penetrating and protracted finish. One imagines how punching down the fermentative cap on fruit like this could easily red-line, whereas here the tannins are like spun steel and sharpness of focus and tight concentration go hand in hand with richness and refinement.
