Domaine Ramonet: Chassagne-Montrachet Star Producer for Prestige & Concentration
A Must-Drink Vintage for White Burgundy Lovers
Chassagne-Montrachet is one of a trio of great white wine villages in southern Côte de Beaune, known internationally for the superb expressions of Chardonnay that made the grape famous. Many winemaking families have built their reputations from some of these extraordinary vineyards, some donning the prestigious Premier Cru and Grand Cru titles. The roster of domaines and family names here can be overwhelming, making Burgundy dizzyingly complex even to the seasoned Burgundy lower. There are many incredible producers in Chassagne-Montrachet, but Domaine Ramonet rises above the rest.
Ramonet’s star power stems from their multi-generational reputation for stylistic intensity overlaying clear sense of place. Originally established in the 1930s by the legendary Pierre Ramonet, the domaine is run today by his grandson Jean-Claude, who maintains the traditional techniques that convey this family style. By keeping vine age high and yields low, concentration and a reverberant depth of quality is clear across all bottlings, especially so in Côte de Beaune’s top sites. In addition to four outstanding Montrachet Grand Cru sites, each capable of reaching the highest highs in experience and price, Ramonet also works with a handful of Premier Cru sites, including Chassagne-Montrachet’s Morgeot, Le Cailleret, and the enclosed monopole Clos du Caillerets.
With Ramonet’s distinctive character radiating throughout, every site-specific bottling is a pure reflection of terroir and vintage. In the last ten years, 2014, 2015, and 2017 have been showing extraordinarily well, each worth exploring for their own expression. 2014 has shown intensity and juicy ripeness, while the warmer 2015 was highly-regarded for showcasing richer tones. In 2017, quality stayed high in the face of challenging frost conditions and the cooler year translates to freshness and vibrancy in glass. Don’t miss out on a chance to experience these fantastic vintages through the lens of Chassagne-Montrachet’s most beloved producer.
For The Love Of Terroir
The 2020 Domaine Ramonet Puligny-Montrachet is a true expression of the region's terroir, as any great Burgundy strives to be. A truly unique combination of soil, climate, and vineyard practices in Puligny-Montrachet contribute to the wine's distinctive character. The vineyards in this region are planted with Chardonnay, which thrives off the limestone-rich soils and benefits from the crisp cool climate. Ramonet’s vinification of the wines is done in a traditional way before aging in pristine oak barrels between 12 to 18 months. The Domaine’s philosophy has always been to respect the great diversity of their terroir through sustainable practices, tillage and controlled yields. These conditions result in wines with great finesse, elegance, and aging potential.
