Domaine de Montille: Vosne Romanee, Puligny Montrachet, Corton Clos du Roi & More

Like many Burgundy estates, Domaine de Montille was founded in the 1730s but underwent financial and leadership turmoil throughout much of the 18th and 19th centuries. Then, in 1947, a 17-year-old Hubert Montille took charge after his father's death and revitalized the struggling estate, marking a new era in Montille's history. Growing from a small 2.5-hectare property to 37 hectares across multiple vineyards, the estate is now firmly in the hands of his children, Etienne and Alix, the 9th generation of Montille's to lead the estate.

Hubert Montille Leads A Struggling Estate

At only 17 years of age, Hubert Montille was thrust into ownership duties due to his father's passing. Mixing a career in law and winemaking, Hubert was a savvy young man with a strong business acumen. He understood the estate's storied history - one that involves vineyard ownership of Les Amoureueses, Chambolle Musigny, and Bonnes Mares in the 19th century. Rather than focusing on winemaking, Hubert sought to acquire new plots of land to enhance the estate's ability to produce top-quality wine. Hubert passed down this tradition to his son, Etienne, who also attended law school and worked as a lawyer to gain more land for Montille. Ultimately, the land expanded from a measly 2.5 hectares in 1947 to 37 hectares today. Such growth has given the estate the license to produce red and white wines across an incredible 38 labels.

Fiercely Independent, Never Settled

The Montille estate has gained a reputation for having an independent, one-tracked culture when it comes to winemaking. Never one to follow trends, Hubert Montille insisted on producing wines suited for long-term aging, despite hurting the approachability of drinks in their youth. Consistently made with pristine finesse and elegance, Montille wines are harvested by hand and have used biodynamic and organic methods since the mid-1990s. The use of chemicals like pesticides and insecticides was removed from harvest, and hydraulic inter-row scratching was introduced. Furthermore, cover crops and respectful pruning techniques were introduced to strengthen vine defense, while manual vine trimming and shearing delay bud break and protect the vine from spring frost.

In the vinification process, Montille was one of the first Burgundy producers to domaine bottle its wine, signifying that each grape was grown, harvested, and bottled on the same estate.  Additionally, the final wines use low chapitalization- adding sugar to the grape juice before fermentation to increase alcohol levels. Though this started as a simple miscalculation by Hubert regarding the sugar levels of the 1959 vintage, the estate has continued this tradition as the wines have increased in quality.
