Maison Leroy 2018 Blanc by Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy

Maison Leroy Blanc

"Lalou Bize-Leroy stands virtually alone at the top of Burgundy’s quality hierarchy" Robert M. Parker, Jr. 1997

A little history of Maison LEROY: Francois Leroy, winemaker, owner of vine at Auxey-Duresses, founded Maison LEROY in 1868. His son, Henri LEROY joined the business in 1919. in 1942 he became half owner of Domaine Romanée-Conti which is still held by the Leroy family today. His daughter, Lalou BIZE-LEROY joined the family business, Maison Leroy, in 1955. She sought to understand each “terroir” from each vineyard of Burgundy. For Maison Leroy, still today, she searches unceasingly to purchase the best wines, and for her the best is always yet to come.   http://www.domaine-leroy.com

One of the absolute best winemakers in history, Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy taps two different wines. One with Domaine Leroy on the label, the other with Maison Leroy. The only difference is whether Bize-Leroy owns the parcel on which the grapes are grown. The price of Maison Leroy is almost a tenth of the price of Domaine Leroy, but the potential is huge.

“Lalou Bize-Leroy. The controversial Lalou must drive many Burgundians crazy given the extraordinary quality of her wines, and the high prices they fetch. She is un uncompromising winemaker, with a portfolio of red and white Burgundies that qualitatively have no peers.” Robert M. Parker, Jr. 1998

The Domaine has been farmed biodynamically from the start and is blessed with a heritage of ancient vines, in part because Lalou Bize-Leroy never replants an entire vineyard. Only vine by vine as needed from buds of sister vines from the same vineyard, but never too many at once in a given vineyard. These old vines combined with her training system (e.g.; when shoots are lengthening, they are curled back instead of cut back) and pruning policy (e.g.; restricting the bunches to just four per vine) explains in part the concentration of her wines.
The quality of the fruit is so great that there is no official winemaker in the cellar. As Lalou explains it "we follow a recipe for fermentation but we don’t make the wine. We just watch and look and let it make itself.” After rigorous deselection on the sorting tables, which employ as many people as there are pickers, the wines are never exposed to the fining, filtering or filtration process, further accentuating their relentless pursuit of perfection.
The result? We can read about it and few can afford the opportunity to drink. Take this chance to experience the passion of Bize-Leroy!
