Product Description

NM96 "Tasted at Farr Vintners’ vertical from ex-chateau magnum. The 2006 Angelus has a very deep but pure colour. It has a pixelated nose, the same that it has had from its youth, great definition and lift with the Merlot more in evidence now: black cherries, loganberry, a touch of orange-blossom and tangible mineralite. The palate is very crisp with a firm backbone, perhaps needing a couple more years to fully integrate, but it bounds along like a yapping puppy from start to finish. Certainly not a blockbuster Angelus, but beautifully realized and pixelated. Tasted October 2011." NM for WJ Mar 2012

RP95 "This is another sleeper of the vintage from Hubert de Bouard. The 2006 reminds me somewhat of the 2001, perhaps not quite as lush at this state, but underrated as a vintage at this property. Dense purple, with sweet boysenberry, blueberry and black-raspberry fruit, licorice, chocolate and a touch of barbecue smoke, a bit of graphite also makes an appearance in this full-bodied, opulent wine that seems to be maturing much like the 2001. Drink it over the next 20-25 years." RP Aug 2015

JA97 "Double decanted but still extremely tannic, this hsa layers of muscle even at 13 years old. It's very different in style from the others in the lineup: here, I get more menthol notes alongside the dense layers of fruit, rich tobacco, earth and olive tapenade. It's beautiful in depth and persistency, with the first hints of secondary characters in its truffle hit on the finish." JA for DR Nov 2018

Robert Parker writes, "The Bouard family, the proprietors of Chateau Angelus, date from 1544 in St.-Emilion. Located on lower hillsides, with a southerly exposure. Hubert de Bouard, who single-handedly elevated the quality from one of mediocrity (vintages such as 1978, 1982, 1983, and 1985 were disappointing), hit pay dirt with his efforts starting in 1988. Since then, there has been a remarkable succession of great wines. Both a second and third wine are made, as the selection process for Angelus is severe. All of this resulted in the 2012 Angelus being upgraded, along with Pavie, to, Premier Grand Cru Classe A, joining Cheval Blanc and Ausone as one of only four estates in St.-Emilion to receive this accolade."
