Founded in 1826, the 200-year-old estate has crafted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that have wowed enthusiasts, critics, and more.
Domaine Louis Jadot History
After purchasing the Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Urusles in 1826, Louis Henry Denis decided to officially begin Domain Louis Jadot as a winery in 1859. Rather than creating wines from his own vineyard, Denis operated Jadot as a negociant, buying wines from vineyard owners and selling wines to Northern European countries. After over a century of successful family ownership, in the late 20th century, Louis Jean Baptiste Jadot purchased numerous vineyards like Corton Pouget and Chevalier Montrachet les Demoiselles, beginning the estate's transition to negociant-heavy business and multiple vineyard ownership. The family has followed this foundation since, producing nearly 200 labels from village, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy.
Louis Jadot Burgundy Vineyards
As the owners of over 270 hectares of village, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, Jadot lays claim as one of the region's largest producers. The majority of the plots of land are located in the Cote d'Or Premier and Grand Cru vineyards, such as the prestigious Clos de Vougeot, Griotte Chambertin, and Charmes Chambertin vineyards. Clos de Vougeot is arguably Jadot's greatest vineyard and one of Burgundy's greatest vineyards as well. The land is planted to 100% pinot noir and is known for its array of slopes and soils. Plantings here are very divided and each producer can receive grapes of varying quality depending on their location on the vineyard.
Jadot holds one of the best plots in Vougeot, with 50 hectares facing east. The soil ranges from chalky stoney clay on the high slopes to moist, compact soil with fewer stones on the lower slopes. After hand-picking the grapes, they are crushed then fermented for 4 weeks in stainless steel tanks before being aged in oak barrels for 18 months. Overall, Jadot aims to use as little oak as possible and believes in a non-interventionalist philosophy. The wines undergo long macerations, and wild yeast is used when possible.
Louis Jadot Red Burgundy Stunners
Choosing a top wine from Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines can be difficult, making each bottle from this producer a top Jadot red Burgundy. Similar to the vineyard holdings, the Clos de Vougeot bottle has transformed not only into one of Jadot's greatest wines, but Burgundy's greatest wines as a whole. The 2005 bottle was rated an incredible 94 points by Burghound's Allen Meadows, one of the highest rated wines in the publication's history. He exclaimed, "In sum, this is impressive... excellent concentration to the broad-shouldered, powerful and intense flavors that possess an impressive level of sappy dry extract, all wrapped in a driving, youthfully austere and ever-so-mildly rustic finish."
