Myriad Cellars - “This is pure Napa Valley brilliance”

"equivalent of a great vintage of a Mission Haut-Brion on steroids"
- Robert M. Parker Jr., Dec 2015

In the vast and intricate world of winemaking, one name stands out for its commitment to diversity and the art of storytelling – Myriad Cellars. Derived from the Greek word "Myrias," meaning "ten thousand" or "innumerable," Myriad is a fitting name for a winery that crafts wines with countless facets and expressions.

The Story & The Winemaker

The winemaking journey of Myriad Cellars began with founder and winemaker Mike Smith, who started under the tutelage of Winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, of Schrader Cellars fame, in 1999. Originating from Oregon, Mike had garnered an interest in wine from an early age on. Working "free of charge" during his first harvests, Mike honed his craft and ventured out on his own in 2005. His portfolio now includes critically acclaimed wines from various labels like Myriad Cellars, Quivet Cellars, PerChance Estates, Becklyn Cellars, Scarlett Wines, Kindred Cellars, and Flora Springs. He’s even produced wines at some of Napas biggest names including Schrader, Maybach Family and Outpost. Mike's philosophy centers on creating wines that are true to their varietal character and sense of place.

Though he possesses a broad skillset applied to multiple varietals, Mike's Cabernet Sauvignons have collectively earned an impressive sixteen 100-point scores from both Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and critic Jeb Dunnuck. Notably, Mike has achieved the distinction of receiving the most 100-point scores from Wine Advocate in a single vintage not once, but twice. In 2012, three of his wines were selected for the prestigious Flavor Napa Valley “Legends of Napa Valley Definitive Tasting.”

Winemaking Philosophy

"Great wine is made from 100% the winemaker, 100% the vineyard and 100% Mother Nature's mood during harvest" – Mike Smith

At the core of Myriad Cellars' philosophy is a commitment to crafting wines that reflect both the vineyard's distinct personality and the nuances of each grape variety. The winery embraces a minimalistic approach to winemaking, allowing the fruit to speak for itself while showcasing the meticulous care invested in every step of the winemaking process.

Mike's expertise lies in his ability to capture the unique character and intricate complexity of each vintage. His refined natural winemaking techniques stand as a defining force in some of the world's most illustrious vineyards. From consulting on the selection of specific rows within diverse vineyard blocks to collaborating with the Beckstoffer team to tailor farming practices and making pivotal harvest decisions – Mike assumed a comprehensive role. Constantly testing and tasting the wine and making nuanced adjustments along the way, ensuring that each vintage not only meets but exceeds his exceptionally high standards.

High-Profile Vineyards

Myriad Cellars crafts a diverse array of wines sourced from select Napa Valley vineyards, with the crown jewel being the renowned Beckstoffer Dr. Crane vineyard. This historic 25-acre vineyard, planted in 1858 and nestled atop deep alluvial soils, is a cornerstone for Myriad Cellars.

Situated in St Helena's Sulphur Creek river bed, this esteemed Napa Valley vineyard boasts a prime location. The well-draining soil of the valley floor imparts a unique depth, consistently yielding powerful and concentrated wines with a distinctive gravely grip. This terroir unfolds with nuanced notes of anise and plush classic Cabernet red and dark fruit, creating a truly exceptional tasting experience.

Recognized as the true gem of Myriads portfolio, the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is meticulously harvested in two separate picks. This careful selection process leads to the two distinct expressions of this exceptional terroir – the Dr. Crane and the coveted Dr. Crane Elysian. Each bottling captures the essence of this prestigious vineyard, showcasing the depth, complexity, and richness that make it a standout in the world of Napa Valley wines.

For the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard 'Elysian' Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, seven rows of meticulously tended Cabernet Sauvignon vines are harvested. The winemaking magic unfolds at the Tamber Bey Winery in Calistoga, where these wines are brought to life.

Myriad Cellars extends its portfolio to include wines from other noteworthy vineyards. The Beckstoffer Georges III vineyard in Rutherford spans 300 acres and thrives on loam and red volcanic clay soils. This vineyard is the source of grapes for the exclusive single-vineyard Georges III Cabernet Sauvignon.

Further enhancing their offerings, Myriad Cellars draws Cabernet Sauvignon from the Three Twins vineyard in St Helena, while the Las Madres vineyard in Carneros contributes Syrah, and Sémillon is carefully sourced from various growers across Napa Valley. The Sangiacomo Tall Grass vineyard in Sonoma Valley adds Pinot Noir to the repertoire, contributing to a selection of rosés, some of which are creatively released in cans.

In addition to the Myriad Cellars estate wines, Mike Smith oversees the production of wines under various labels, including 12C, Ancillary Cellars, Becklyn Cellars, Carter Cellars, Scarlett, and Quivet Cellars. To experience the culmination of these winemaking endeavors.

A Myriad of Flavors

From the careful selection of vineyards to the artful blending of varietals, each bottle tells a story of dedication, passion, and a deep appreciation for the land. Whether you are a seasoned oenophile or a casual wine enthusiast, Myriad Cellars invites you to uncork a bottle and embark on a journey through the myriad of flavors that define Napa Valley's winemaking excellence.
