Domaine Pierre Damoy is one of Burgundy's longest-standing producers, dating back to the 1920s. Now in its 5th generation of family winemaking, Damoy wines are produced from some of the region's greatest Grand Cru vineyards, most notably in the appellation, Gevrey Chambertin. Praised by critics from Robert Parker to Antonio Galloni, a bottle of Pierre Damoy pinot noir is a true gem in one of the world's most renowned wine regions.
Pierre Damoy: Top-Notch Burgundy Winemaking
Though Domaine Pierre Damoy was established in the 1920s by Julien Damoy, it was not until 30 years ago that the once-underperforming estate rose to prominence. Once Pierre Damoy took over as the lead winemaker, Damoy wines gained a new reputation as a Burgundy great. From his very first vintage, the 1993 Pierre Damoy Clos de Beze, famed critics like Robert Parker took immediate notice and flocked to the wine like never before. With plots in Grand Cru vineyards such as Clos de Beze, Damoy produces one of the best pinot noirs in the world.
Because of the estate's long history, many of its vines were planted in the 1920s, as vines planted in the 1970s are considered "young" for Damoy. It holds one of the largest vineyards in Clos de Beze at 5.4 hectares, also comprising half of its 11 hectares of vineyards in total. Nearly 75% of those 11 hectares are Grand Cru vineyards, displaying Damoy's power in the region and incredible terroir.
"The Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze and Chapelle-Chambertin are the best wines produced on this estate in more than three decades." — Robert Parker
Domaine Pierre Damoy Winemaking
Like many top Burgundy producers, Pierre Damoy follows a strict vinification process, helped by his winery renovations in 2002 that saw new equipment and technology enter the area. Each vintage is hand-harvested, picked, and sorted relatively late into the harvesting season, before undergoing maceration for up to 15 days, fermentation in open-top vats, and 18 months of aging in 100% new French oak barrels.
Though Pierre uses no chemicals on the soil, he shies away from labelling his techniques as "biodynamic," believing the term is a fashionable trend for winemakers. He has used sustainable methods from the day he took over and puts his background in agricultural research to work, doing whatever he can to preserve the character of each plot.
