2017 La Mission Haut Brion - "the most constant in terms of quality"

"the most constant in terms of quality" Haut Brion's younger sibling

Chateau La Mission Haut Brion is one of the greatest wines from the Graves region of Bordeaux, second only to Chateau Haut Brion. Exhibiting similar quality to Chateau Haut Brion. For some vintages, La Mission is considered to be one of Bordeaux's greatest value wines.

2010 Château Mouton
““In my personal collection, I have more bottles of La Mission Haut-Brion than any other wine in the world. La Mission has been one of the best wines for a long time, and one of the most constant in terms of quality”
– Robert Parker

After the very informative tour of Chateau La Mission Haut Brion, we concluded in the tasting of both the 2017 Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion side by side! What a treat! While chatting about differences between Haut Brion and La Mission, the Robert Parker quote written above, came up. Why would “The Man” describe La Mission as “constant in terms of quality”? Is it the pain staking sorting, the fermentation, the artistic blending or something else! We were told that the vineyards are a little lower in elevation and protected from the potentially harsh weather patterns like “frost”? It is understandable there will be constant quality coming out of La Mission Haut Brion, always!

Lisa Perrotti Brown refers to it as a "warm little pocket of vineyards close to the city". I just found that quote from LBP and wish I had known that prior to my visit to the chateau. Now YOU know it and can make an informed purchase of LMHB before the world catches on.

La Mission Haut Brion is known as the purest expression of Graves, and many wine lovers prefer La Mission over its Older Sibling. Nothing like drinking a First Growth quality wine for nearly half the cost!

Critical Acclaim:

"A tight, solid red with crushed-berry, sandalwood, stone and cement flavors. It’s full-bodied, yet very tight and compact with excellent depth and intensity. Closed and austere, but there’s both energy and levity to it at the same time." JS Dec 2020

97 Points — James Suckling 2017 La Mission Haut Brion

"This is extremely aromatic and perfumed with crushed-berry, flower, currant and orange-peel character. Full-bodied, very tight and focused with fabulous depth and density that brings you down through the wine. Deep and serious. Very classic wine that reminds me of top Haut-Brions of the mid-1980s." JS Jan 2020

98 Points — James Suckling 2017 Haut Brion

"One of the wines of the vintage, the 2000 has barely budged in its evolution since it was bottled and released in 2002. After ten years in bottle, it still reveals a dense opaque purple color along with a potentially sensational bouquet of blueberries, black currants, graphite, asphalt and background oak. Extremely powerful, full-bodied and superbly concentrated with good acidity and high but round tannins, this massive La Mission-Haut-Brion should take its place among this estate's most hallowed vintages when it hits full maturity in another one to two decades. I was surprised by just how youthful this wine tasted at age 12. If tasted blind, I would have guessed it to be around 4 to 5 years old." RP Aug 2012

100 Points — Robert Parker 2000 La Mission Haut Brion
