Product Description
JA98 "This is a wine that I have loved for many years, and continues to deliver at the top of its game. It showcases the seductive exuberance of Angélus, with its liquorice root, truffle and black chocolate generosity, alongside juicy but now softened blackberry and black cherry fruits, all wrapped up with silky tannins and a ton of grilled oak. Powerful, and very beautiful. 100% new oak. Tasted for a Decanter masterclass." JA for IB Oct 2021
DR98 "Easily one of the most impressive Bordeaux 2001s that you can find. Full of liquorice, lashings of textured chocolate shavings, smoked earth and black truffle - powerful, fragrant and intense. Grilled almond smoke on the nose as it opens, a wine that keeps on delivering. Very few bottles of this left at the estate, and it is worth savouring." JA for DR Nov 2021
RP97 "A real sleeper of the vintage, and somewhat underrated and under the radar after the greatness of 2000, the 2001 Angelus is on a faster evolutionary track than the 2000, but it is a plush, sexy, succulent style of Angelus with a dense plum/purple color, loads of chocolate, blueberry and blackberry fruit, telltale floral scents in the intense fragrance, and a lush, voluptuously textured and opulent mouthfeel. This wine seems to have entered its plateau of maturity, where it should stay for at least another 10-15 years. It is a major sleeper of the vintage." RP Aug 2015
LP96 "A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2001 Angelus has a deep garnet-brick color. It leaps from the glass with bold scents of redcurrant jelly, unsmoked cigars, crushed rocks, and cumin seed, leading to a core of plum preserves and dried flowers, with a waft of cast-iron pan. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers amazing tension, with a firm frame of grainy tannins to support the intense red and black berry preserve layers, finishing on a lingering ferrous note."
