2001 Abreu Madrona Ranch - A True Robert Parker 100
Back in the early 1990’s Robert Parker advised clients to purchase what we now know as "Napa Cult Wines.” He sparingly doted 100 point scores on the best of best from Napa, including the epic 1997 Abreu Madrona Ranch, putting them on the map. 4 years later, he also gave the 2001 the magic 100 point score. Today, 100 point wines are a dime a dozen, as critics have gotten heavy handed with what should be reserved for only a few wines per vintage.
This amazing bottle of 2001 Abreu Madrona Ranch has been in our cellar for at least 10 years. A soon as I smelled the nose, I told my wife “now this is a true 100 pointer from Robert Parker.”
This opaque black purple Madrona Ranch, with an ethereal, seamless nose of pure black fruit interlaced with floral notes and subtle vanilla, had my attention from start to finish. The palate was pure silk, and although hedonistic right out of the bottle, the wine was still an infant at 22 and appeared to be in a time capsule that could last for decades. I have been saying for years the Abreu Madrona and Thorevilos are the most consistently great wines made in Napa Valley.
Oh, and the Krug Grand Cuvee didn’t suck either!!!
