1999 Niellon Batard Montrachet at Jeune et Jolie
Got a recommendation to check out San Diego’s newest Michelin star restaurant Jeune et Jolie in Carlsbad, CA and decided to take this 1999 Niellon.
From nose to finish, this 1999 Batard Monty lived up to the vintage's hype. The nose was more like Ramonet than Leflaive’s amazing 1999’s, as there was no reduction, but plenty of minerality and lemon rind that sang from the glass. The texture was seamless and silky, expected of a grand cru, with great mouthfeel and rich layers of tannin that were not heavy. Each sip begged for another until sadly the bottle was gone!
Although I was a bit concerned about oxidation at this age, the color was beautiful and the wine held up over the course of the meal. This was a sensational example of back vintage Niellon and an example of the aging potential for white Burgundy before the pre-oxidation era started in the early 2000s.
