Product Description
LP100 "A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2009 Angelus is deep garnet in color, with a touch of brick. It swans out of the glass with gregarious notions of Indian spices, kirsch, blackberry pie, and plum preserves, leading to wafts of candied violets, licorice, and clove oil. The full-bodied palate is so, so plush, jam-packed with multi-layered black fruits, finishing very long and beautifully fragrant." LPB for TWI Feb 2024
JD100 "A perfect wine in every way, the 2009 Chateau Angelus checks in alongside the 1990, 2000, 2005, 2018, 2019, and 2020 as the finest vintages from this incredible estate. Still deep ruby-hued with no bricking, it has a mammoth-sized bouquet of cassis, smoked tobacco, flowery incense, truffly earth, and chocolate that’s to die for. These all carry over to the palate, which has full-bodied richness, a stacked mid-palate, ripe building tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. As I wrote the last time I tasted this elixir, it offers an amazing amount of both hedonistic and intellectual pleasure. It has at least another 2-3 decades of prime drinking ahead of it." RP99+ "A candidate for perfection with a few more years of bottle age, this great vintage of Angelus has an almost impenetrable black/purple color and a gorgeous nose of incense, graphite, blackberry liqueur, truffles and spring flowers. The wine is full-bodied, with a voluptuous texture a magnificent concentration and purity of fruit, a stunning finish of close to a minute, and wonderfully sweet, velvety tannins that make for a prodigious Angelus that should turn out to be one of the all-time greats ever made at this estate. Drink it over the next 25-50 years." RP Aug 2015
Robert Parker writes, "The Boüard family, the proprietors of Château Angelus, date from 1544 in St.-Emilion. Located on lower hillsides, with a southerly exposure, their 67-acre vineyard, composed of sandstone, limestone and clay, is planted with 47% Cabernet Franc, 50% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Hubert de Boüard, who single-handedly elevated the quality from one of mediocrity (vintages such as 1978, 1982, 1983, and 1985 were disappointing), hit pay dirt with his efforts starting in 1988. Since then, there has been a remarkable succession of great wines. All of this resulted in the 2012 Angelus being upgraded, along with Pavie, to Premier Grand Cru Classé A, joining Cheval Blanc and Ausone as one of only four estates in St.-Emilion to receive this accolade."
