Don't Miss Out on the Secret: Beat the Renaissance
Domaine Robert Groffier & Sons
Renaissance in the dictionary is a revival of or renewed interest in something. Before the world catches on, grab these 1'er Cru Burgs!
Burgundy wine regions can be so complicated so I looked these up found that these two Vineyards that the monks deemed as Premier Cru are adjacent and on similar slopes as some of our favorite Grand Cru vineyards. I think we all have respect for the tireless hours the monks spent tasting wines from each of these designations and can also guess that a Premier Cru this close to a Grand Cru, may drink like a Grand Cru. BTW: I had to look up the word: cognoscenti. Its definition is: people who are considered to be especially well informed about a particular subject. I hope today you are more well informed about these stunning vineyards and the resulting wines produced by the Groffier's!
Les Sentiers & Les Haut Doix - Premier Cru next to Grand Cru:
Les Sentiers: The 4.9 hectare (12 acre) vineyard lies about 500m (0.3 miles) northeast of Chambolle-Musigny village, although it is closer to the extended spread of Morey-Saint-Denis. It lies below the Grand Cru Bonnes-Mares to the west, up the slope, and borders fellow Chambolle Premier Cru Les Baudes to the south.
Les Haut Doix: The vineyard covers a thin, 1.7 hectare (4.2 acre) strip of land between the Les Amoureuses and Les Charmes Premier Cru climats – arguably the two most famous in Chambolle-Musigny. Les Amoureuses which lies just below the (Le) Musigny Grand Cru!
The 2010 and 2012 Vintages "Nicolas Groffier, who has taken over winemaking duties since 2007 says about the 2010, "The wines are very concentrated owing to the small grapes."
Critical Acclaim:
"Healthy deep red. Tight aromas of blueberry and violet. Densely packed but light on its feet; more savory and less fruity than the village Gevrey. Finishes with slightly edgy tannins and good minty persistence. I may be underrating this wine today." ST for VM Nov 2014
"This may have been my best visit to date to this estate, as some stunning wines were made here in both 2013 and 2012."
2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts Doix
"Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers has an upfront, fruit-driven bouquet with pure raspberry, wild strawberry and dried rose petal aromas that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, gentle at first but segueing into quite a structured and multi-layered finish with edgy redcurrant and crushed strawberry notes on the finish. This is excellent. Tasted September 2016." NM for WA Nov 2016
