Beckstoffer Chateau Boswell Jacquelynn 2010
Great Value for the Quality - Beckstoffer Fruit
"All of the elements are in place in this brilliant effort”
- Antonio Galloni for the Wine Advocate;
2010 Jacquelynn Wines, Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon
The Jacquelynn Wines are so secretive, the Wine-Searcher had a hard time publishing. As it turns out, these wines made of Beckstoffer Fruit, by well-known winemaker Luc Morlet, Excellent 2010 Vintage, in special etched large format took some actual research! Confusing in that the wines are from Chateau Boswell, but labelled as Jacquelynn. Not too much information, maybe because there was not much made of this brilliant effort wine!
I feel like I have found a diamond in the rough and I get to share it with you! Do we need more than Beckstoffer, Luc Morlet, 2010 and some in large format? Like Mr. Galloni says, "All of the elements ... of a great wine and reasonably priced because it is a best kept secret....
The collection of what may be a great drinker in 750mL, a great small gathering wine in Mag and a great celebration or collectible wine in 3L Double Mag or 6L Imperial!

Background:
TO KALON VINEYARD - 2010 Jacquelynn Beckstoffer To Kalon
Beckstoffer Heritage Vineyard
Perhaps the most famous of the Beckstoffer vineyards, Beckstoffer To Kalon was purchased from Beaulieu Vineyard in 1993. Napa pioneer Hamilton Crabb first planted the vineyard in 1868, and it has produced some of the Napa Valley's best red grapes ever since. Replanted in 1994 to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with modern trellising and closer vine spacing, the vineyard produces several highly coveted vineyard-designated wines.

MISSOURI HOPPER VINEYARD - 2010 Jacquelynn Oakville
Beckstoffer Heritage Vineyard
Located north of the town of Yountville in the Oakville AVA, Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper was originally part of a large piece of land owned by George C. Yount, from whom the town of Yountville takes its name. Purchased by Charles Hopper and given to his daughter Missouri in 1877, the land was planted to wine grapes and, as much of the Napa land was at that time, prunes and walnuts. In 1960, the land was purchased by Bruce Kelham as part of the historic Vine Hill Ranch. Purchased by Beckstoffer Vineyards from the Kelham family in 1996, the vineyard is today planted with multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Château Boswell, Jacquelynn Wines
Château Boswell is one of northern Napa Valley’s stunning estates; the winery was founded by Los Angeles born Richard Thornton Boswell, in 1979 purchased 10 acres of land – what would become the home of Château Boswell Winery (built in 1982). Their first commercial release was in 1979, merely several hundred cases. Their production has grown significantly since then yet still remains fairly small focusing on limited production hand-crafted wines (usually several thousand cases per year spread over a number of small lot wines).
Note: in 2020, tragically Chateau Boswell burned in the Glass Fire, one of the very early winery casualties from that particular fire.

Luc Morlet
Luc’s professional career began upon completion of graduate school as the assistant winemaker for the Val d’Or Champagne Cellars. In 1994, Luc worked under the guidance of consultant Jacques Boissenot at Chateau Dauzacx, a classified Margaux growth, and began crafting his skills in making Bordeaux-style wines. In 2001, Luc joined the Peter Michael Winery as their winemaker. Continuing Helen Turley and Mark Aubert’s legacy, Luc’s technical leadership helped Peter Michael to improve upon its already acclaimed wines from 2001 through 2005. In 2006, Luc started Morlet Family Vineyards with his wife, crafting premium wines from both Bordeaux and Burgundy varietals.
Antonio Galloni writes, "Luc and Jodie Morlet’s 2010s are off the charts. The 2010s have huge structure, but the fruit is so ripe and voluptuous in these wines that the perception of tannin is often imperceptible." AG for WA Dec 2012
2010 Vintage
Vintage quality: Excellent
Current condition: Ready to drink, will keep
The 2010 vintage for California was exceptionally good.
A cold damp spring delayed both budburst and flowering and the growing season continued down a chilly vein with conditions reportedly some of the coolest on record.
Despite stopping short of legendary, some gorgeous wines were made and many will still drink well now. The best fine reds, particularly Cabernet Sauvignons, are likely to be able to cellar even further.
