100 Point 2015 & 2016 Lokoya Mt Veeder - Off-the-Charts Cabernet Sauvignon
100 Point 2015 & 2016 Lokoya Mt. Veeder ~ Perfect Cabernet from Mountain Fruit
- Jeb Dunnuck on 2016 Lokoya Mt. Veeder
- Brilliant Wine Maker Chris Carpenter
- Mountain Fruit
The vineyards have four distinct hillside sites, Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder, Diamond Mountain, and Spring Mountain. The wines are aged in French oak for 18 to 22 months, and the vinification process for all four is the same in order to showcase the unique characteristics of each terroir in the wine. The Mount Veeder plot sits at 1800 feet above sea level, the highest elevation, and has volcanic soils that force the vines to seek nutrients, creating intensely concentrated fruit. Chris Carpenter has been the winemaker since 2000 and ensures that only the best grapes are chosen for the wine, causing limited production.
- The Vintages
The 2015 and 2016 vintages have excellent ratings and are in the perfect stage to drink or cellar. Both vintages produced highly concentrated and well-balanced fruit, but in limited qualities causing these vintages to be rare. With only 618 cases of 2015 and 1,100 cases of 2016 produced, these wines will be tough to find in the coming years, considering their 100-point scores. Sadly, there will be no release of the 2017 Vintage due to the fires.
Critical Acclaim:
"The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder is as compelling a Cabernet Sauvignon as one could ever hope to taste. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a high-elevation site boasts an inky/purple color, and smells of ink, blueberry liqueur, blackberries, black raspberries, mulberries, licorice, charcoal and camphor. With magnificent fruit richness, a layered, full-bodied mouthfeel, and incredible length, this seamlessly constructed 2012 should provide immense pleasure for 25+ years. Production just over 1,300 cases for the Mt. Veeder. They are extraordinary expressions of their terroirs." RP Oct 2014

2012 Lokoya Mount Veeder
"Very deep inky purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder is a little youthfully reticent at this stage, offering glimpses at freshly crushed black currants, black berries and plums with touches of dried Provence herbs, menthol, cigar boxes and Indian spices. Full-bodied with very firm, very ripe tannins and an incredible core of black fruit, earth and spice layers, it has wonderful freshness and depth, finishing long and multilayered." 2015 Lokoya Mount Veeder
"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder is composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with gregarious creme de cassis, wild blueberries and black raspberries with nuances of black tea, violets, aniseed, truffles and new leather plus wafts of charcuterie and chargrill. Full-bodied, very firm and very tightly wound at this youthful stage, the palate is absolutely packed with black fruit and earthy layers, finishing with epic persistence. 1,100 cases produced."
