Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne ~ 2019 Bonneau du Martray
Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne ~ Bonneau du Martray
Today, I get share with you, somewhat of a secret Grand Cru White Burgundy. The wines of Domaine Bonneau du Martray. Well it is not that much of a secret as Screaming Eagle and Domaine de la Romanee Conti seem to have vested interest in the terroir of BdM. Domaine Bonneau du Martray, whose holding in both Le Charlemagne and En Charlemagne are unique with West facing slopes experiencing sun from from mid-morning until sunset. The unicorn terroir of burgundy.
Back in 2017, the owner of Screaming Eagle purchased a majority stake in Bonneau du Martray. AND recently, The Domaine contracted to lease a portion of plots of Corton Charlemagne from BdM to cultivate, harvest and vinify what is now the 2019 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru!
The very same fruit that has gone into decades of vintages of Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne are now going into the Corton-Charlemagne that are running nearly $13,000 / Bottle. Doesn't it make one curious to own BdM and taste what the fruit has become? Or perhaps invest in some before everyone finds out and the price starts approaching that of the Most Expensive Wines of the world?
We had the privilege of visiting Bonneau du Martray. Our time with cellar master, Emmanuel Hautus left us in awe of his humility and his commitment to his staff, his fruit and his terroir. He was so engaging and generous as he tasted us through 2009, 2011 and Corton Charlemagne and even the 2020 Corton Grand Cru. Incredible!
Take this opportunity to buy some Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru White Burgundy! Some for a fraction of other more famous Domaine's! OR for those of you who do not compromise the Designer Brands, buy Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Corton-Charlemagne. Either way, you get Grand Cru White Burgundy!

2019 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru White "There is enough wood to point out surrounding the mildly exotic and phenolic aromas of dried white and yellow orchard fruit that possess intricate nuances of spice, Asian-style tea, fennel, floral wisps and wet stone. I very much like the highly seductive texture of the caressing and beautifully concentrated mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that display stunningly good length on the very dry and impeccably well-balanced finale. This gorgeous CC should age gracefully for the next 12 to 15 years and drink well for twice that long. A great first effort!" Allen Meadows June 2022
