Product Description
"Bright, dark red; not hugely saturated. Briary blueberry, black raspberry, menthol, bitter chocolate and herbs on the nose, with a warmer note of strawberry liqueur emerging with air. Very dense, thick and sweet; the most liqueur-like Dunn Howell Mountain to this point, reflecting the wine's highest alcohol to date. With its rich, deep flavors of plum, raspberry, tobacco and toffee, this is the most Pomerol-like of these vintages, finishing very long, with broad, substantial, palate-saturating tannins but no hard edges. In its flesh and palate presence this is very much a creature of its vintage. My original note on this wine says that Randy Dunn increased his percentage of new oak from 50% to 67% with this vintage, and that may partly explain the wine's sweetness. I suspect Dunn views this vintage as an outlier. (AG)" (August 2018)
"Howell Mountain.... typically demands 20 years to enter its early peak. These Cabernets are for the patient, but make no mistake about it, in top vintages the Howell Mountain is one of the great wines, not just of California, but of the world." AG for The Wine Advocate Published: Dec 22, 2011
"The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a fabulous example of the year. Dark, red-toned fruit, blood orange, spice, dried flowers and herbs saturate the palate. This is an especially ripe, dense wine from Dunn, and yet all the elements are so well balanced, so integrated. Huge tannins suggest a long life. I admire the interplay of intense fruit and vibrant mountain energy. This is an especially strong showing from the 2002" AG97 Dec 2011
