VM96 "The 1999 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is by some margin the high point of the decade and clearly one of the greatest wines that the Seysses family has conjured from this vineyard. It is blessed with a heavenly bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, briar, wild strawberry and wilted flowers – so refined and so sensual. Medium-bodied on the palate, with just a speck of spice on the entry, this 1999 overrides the power gifted by the growing season to reveal a precise and almost pixelated Clos Saint-Denis. The red fruit is laced with white pepper and sage, delivering a finely tuned crescendo toward the finish, which fans out in brilliant fashion. Anyone who misguidedly believes Clos Saint-Denis cannot produce wines equal to Clos de la Roche ought to taste this." NM for VM Mar. 2020.
