RP98 "The 2010 Madrona Ranch, which David Abreu told me he crop-thinned by at least 50%, is a more backward, tannic, brooding wine at present. An inky/purple color and lots of baking spice, espresso, black and blue fruits, and hints of graphite and toast emerge from this wine as well as formidable tannins in the finish. However, the tannins are sweet and well-integrated in this big, blockbuster effort. It will require patience by purchasers as it needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years; it will drink well over the following three decades." RP Oct 2013
AG98 "Abreu’s 2010 Madrona Ranch (magnum) is so impressive. I don’t think I have ever tasted an Abreu wine from magnum. This is certainly a great, great start. The 2010 impresses with its explosive energy and sheer intensity. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, plum, leather, mocha and spice all saturate the palate. "As a set of wines, it is hard to surpass the four cuvees from the estate vineyards of David Abreu. As I have written many times in the past, all of these wines are truly world-class efforts that stand alongside proprietary red wines made from Bordeaux varietals from any appellation in the world. Abreu has two vineyards in and around the town of St. Helena, the Madrona Ranch at the base of Spring Mountain and the Cappella, which is further toward the town.
