Familia Torres was founded in 1870 and has remained a Spanish wine powerhouse throughout its 150+ years of operation. With over 1,300 hectares of vineyards across three countries, Torres wine represents a winemaking legacy that few producers can match. Now owned by the fifth generation of family winemakers, the winery continues to sell millions of cases globally and has earned the respect and admiration of critics and collectors.
Familia Torres: History Behind Top-Class Spanish Winemaking
Familia Torres was established in 1870 by Jaime Torres Vendrell after returning from a decade of maritime trade work in Cuba. Alongside his brother, Miguel, the pair opened Familia Torres in Vilafranca del Penedes, a small city in Catalonia, and quickly began shipping wines to Cuba before expanding its network to the entire American continent. After a successful start to the winery, Jaime expanded Familia Torres to include brandies under the label "Torres 5," which continues to be one of the world's most popular brandy labels. Then, in 1932, the winery reached global levels of success. Miguel Torres Carbo represented the third generation of Torres winemaking and expertly expanded the winery's reach throughout Europe, as French estates were unable to export their wines due to the ongoing Second World War. As such, Familia Torres made record profits and built new facilities, began bottling its own wines, and introduced its now-famous Vina Sol label.
Over the past century, Familia Torres has firmly launched itself as a reputable global wine powerhouse, winning numerous awards such as "Best European Winery" by Wine Enthusiast and "Most Important Winery in Spain" by Wine Spectator, and seeing its leaders awarded "Decanter Man of the Year." Furthermore, the winery has been visited by two generations of Spanish kings, emphasizing its place in the country's historic importance.
