The Vineyard House Wine Estate

The Vineyard House is a premier, boutique Napa Valley winery set on the western ridgelines of Oakville. With neighbors like Harlan Estate and Futo Estate, The Vineyard House Cabernet Sauvignon displays similar energy and freshness, and has elevated its reputation within the region thanks to the help of Philippe Melka.

The Vineyard House Wine Estate: Historic Napa Valley Legacy

The Vineyard House was founded in 2003 by Jeremy Nickel after his father, Gil Nickel, passed away. Gil was one of Napa Valley's most prominent figures, helping establish Far Niente and restoring the Baldridge House, a historic farmhouse built in the 19th century. He was attracted to Napa Valley after moving to San Francisco to tend to his family's business. Greenleaf Nursery grew from a small business to the second-largest nursery wholesale retailer in the country, allowing Nickel to travel the country and eventually, the world. Despite not drinking alcohol his entire life, Gil Nickel fell in love with wine after a trip to France and returned to San Francisco intent on crafting his own blends. After travelling to the nearby Napa Valley, Nickel purchased a small vineyard and began producing his own wine.

It was not until 1979, however, that Nickel entered the wine business. Upon restoring the Baldridge House, he helped found Far Niente and Dolce Winery. Nickel unfortunately passed away in 2003, inspiring his son, Jeremy, to open The Vineyard House. Jeremy set up the winery in the Baldridge House and acquired prime parcels in Oakville, neighboring Harlan Estate, BOND Winery, and Futo Estate. The inaugural 2005 vintage captured the palates of Napa Valley enthusiasts, though it was not until 2019, when Philippe Melka became a consulting winemaker, that The Vineyard House attracted widespread acclaim.

Melka enlisted his team at Atelier Melka to take charge of the winemaking and hired Jim Barbour as the Vineyard Manager. Barbour is best known for his time at Hundred Acre, Blankiet Estate, Revana Estate, and Grace Family Vineyards, bringing immense experience to the team. Furthermore, head winemaker Maayan Koschitzky previously worked at Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle, ensuring The Vineyard House wines would challenge top bottles from Napa. Today, The Vineyard House produces three wines— a flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Block 8, and a Chardonnay— totalling less than 1,000 cases annually.

The Vineyard House Winery: Oakville Terroir

The Vineyard House holds 33 acres of land in Napa Valley's coveted Oakville AVA. 25 acres are under vine, planted on deep gravel soils in a natural amphitheater of the Mayacamas Range. The microclimate allows the Cabernet vines to ripen slowly, producing fresh, structured, and complex fruit. Organic farming is used to ensure the soil's health, as synthetic fertilizers and weed management are traded for sheep grazing, natural water sources, and cover crops.

After picking the fruit, Atelier Melka conducts a strict vinification process, including parcel-by-parcel fermentation, which the team has dubbed "micro-fermentation." The harvests are vinified separately in three to five-ton lots, spending 20 months in 80% new French oak barrels. Once bottled, the Vineyard House Cabernet exudes intensity and energy, with expressive aromas of graphite and dark cherry. This signature Napa Cabernet has increasingly gained acclaim from top critics like Jeb Dunnuck and Antonio Galloni, with the latter labelling bottles, "Opulent, full-throttle Cabernet Sauvignon."
