The Third Twin is one of Sine Qua Non's exceptional Central California vineyards, based in the small town of Los Alamos. The property was purchased in the spring of 2010 by Manfred Krankl, who doubled the size of the existing plantings. With syrah, mourvedre, petite sirah, and graciano on the vineyard, The Third Twin follows SQN's Rhone-style offerings, as the fruit is blended into SQN's main label wines and also used to produce two single-vineyard wines — The Third Twin, Graciano and Nuestra Señora del Tercer Gemelo.
Sine Qua Non's The Third Twin: Rhone-Style Wines
The former label is made solely from graciano, a rare black grape from northern Spain's Rioja. While the grape is mainly used as a blending variety with tempranillo and grenache, Krankl opted to harness the dark hues and intense aromas into an individual label, once more illustrating his knack for producing innovative and unique wines from the coast of Central California. Similarly, Nuestra Señora del Tercer Gemelo is an eccentric blend of all varieties grown on the vineyard. Despite its recent inception by Sine Qua Non, the bottle has gone on to receive immense praise from seasoned critics, acclaimed for its powerful, savory flavors and floral, exotic notes.

The Third Twin Terroir
Ultimately, the sandy soils and mild microclimate work beautifully for the graciano, mourvedre, and syrah, which make up the majority of the vineyard's vines. All of the vines were own-rooted in 2000 rather than grafted, exposing them to a potential phylloxera outbreak. Thankfully, Sine Qua Non's winemaking team expertly maneuvers through the vines on the deep sandy soils, leaving the fruit with an elegance and freshness that is difficult to find anywhere else.
