Rudd Wine

Rudd Estate is a premier Napa Valley wine estate located on Oakville’s “golden mile” alongside cult wines Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, and Joseph Phelps. Best known for its Cabernet-dominant Estate Red Blend, the wines are crafted from red volcanic soils, resulting in dense, rich, and velvety cuvees that have earned Rudd Wine high ratings from renowned critics. The estate is now led by Samantha Rudd and winemaker Frederick Ammons, who bring collective experience from Spottswoode, Chateau Margaux, The Napa Valley Reserve, and more.

Rudd Winery: Napa Cult History

Rudd Winery was founded in 1996 by Kansas businessman Leslie Rudd, who purchased a 55-acre site on the eastern side of Oakville. The land was previously owned by Steve Girard, a Kaiser Corporation executive who farmed the land for twenty years, creating wines for friends and family only. Once Leslie Rudd acquired the land, he replanted the vineyard with red Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Malbec) and hired famed Napa architect Howard Backen to build the winery.

The state-of-the-art building contains a glass-enclosed tasting room, culinary pavilion, and board-formed concrete art gallery, making it one of the most prized destinations in Napa Valley. Furthermore, Rudd Winery is home to 20,000 square feet of cellar caves, which create the perfect temperature and humidity conditions for wine storage.

After leading the helm for 22 years, Leslie Rudd passed away in 2018, leaving his daughter, Samantha, as owner. Equipped with experience from Spottswoode Winery and Chateau Margaux, she has hired experienced winemaker Fredrick Ammons to craft the cuvees, elevating Rudd Cabernet to new heights. One of Rudd’s greatest achievements in recent years is a 98+ Point score from The Wine Advocate for the 2018 Rudd Oakville Estate Red, which the estate looks to capitalize on in successive vintages.

Rudd Estate: Oakville Terroir

Rudd Estate is home to 55 acres of land in Napa Valley’s Oakville AVA. The estate borders Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Plumpjack Winery, Joseph Phelps Winery, and BOND Winery on what Wine Spectator calls “the filet mignon of Napa Valley Cabernet.” Its vineyard is filled with iron-rich, well-drained, red volcanic soils, an exceptional growing condition for the Cabernet varieties and other Bordeaux red vines. While the site was originally replanted in 1996, the latest vines were imported from Madrona Ranch, To Kalon Vineyard, Spottswoode Winery, and Corison Winery. The new plantings are massale selections and were initiated in 2014, once Rudd Estate stopped working with David Abreu.

Rudd Mount Veeder Vineyard

In addition to the Oakville site, Rudd Winery owns 88 acres at 1,600 feet above sea level in Mount Veeder. The iconic 1833 Abel Vineyard, owned by Edge Hill Winery, produces red Bordeaux varieties, as well as Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Sauvignon Gris for the second wines— Leslie’s Blend.

Rudd Wine: Acclaimed Napa Red Blends

Over the past three decades, Rudd Estate Wine has become one of Napa Valley’s greatest red blends thanks to its velvety texture, dense tannins, and rich profile. Each vintage is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and contains small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The flagship Rudd Oakville Estate Red has been noted as an “iceberg wine,” revealing new layers as the wine matures. Its deep garnet hue, cassis and dark berry notes, and exceptional finish are regularly celebrated, and, with less than 650 cases made each vintage, can be difficult to acquire on the open market.

One of the Rudd Estate’s greatest vintages is its 2014 Rudd Oakville Estate Red, which was celebrated for its expressive bouquet of blackberry and raspberry, iron note on the finish, and full-bodied, classic Napa profile.
