Domaine Georges Roumier – The Gem of Chambolle Musigny

Domaine Georges Roumier: Arguably The Best Producer in Chambolle Musigny

Step into the enchanting world of Domaine Georges Roumier, where passion and tradition converge to craft some of the most exquisite wines known to connoisseurs. Located in the beautiful Chambolle-Musigny, this family-owned estate is one of the longest-established estate bottling Domaine’s in the Côte D’Or with a history dating back to the 1920s.

Let’s Go Back 100 Years in Time

The Roumier story began when Georges Roumier fell in love and married Genevieve Quanquin in 1924. Quanquin had family vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny, which Roumier began to expand upon. Rather than purchasing land directly, Roumier implemented the French sharecropping/lease system of métayage. In this arrangement, an individual cultivates the land on behalf of the owner, receiving a share of the produce in return. This method allowed Roumier to gradually expand the Domaine's portfolio. It all started with modest parcels in Musigny, later progressing to include Bonnes Mares, alongside the acquisition of two plots in Clos de Vougeot. In 1953, Domaine Georges Roumier acquired a 2.5-hectare monopoly of the premier cru Clos de la Bussière in Morey-Saint-Denis from the Bettenfeld family. Notably, during the 1930s, this particular plot was part of the Graillet estate, whose remnants would later become the foundation of the esteemed Domaine Dujac.

Georges Roumier passed away in 1965 leaving his son Jean-Marie to take over, who then entrusted the art of winemaking to his son, Christophe. Christophe is the Domaine’s current winemaker and one can undeniably say that he would have made the Domaine’s former generations proud. With his focus more on the exquisite terroir, he has managed to bring out the uniquely delicate structure and luscious fragrance of these mesmerizing wines.

The Wines

What sets Domaine Georges Roumier apart is their unwavering dedication to quality. The wines are masterfully crafted, capturing the essence of Pinot Noir with remarkable finesse and purity. From the ethereal Chambolle-Musigny and the iconic Bonnes-Mares to the rare and sought-after Musigny, Domaine Georges Roumier consistently raises the bar for Burgundian wines. Every wine brings its own character to the table.

While the Chambolle-Musigny’s offer a delightful medley of red fruit, charming florals, and a silky texture, the Bonnes-Marres bring a richer, seductive profile featuring dark fruit, exotic spices, and an alluring complexity that lingers on the palate. Deep, dark red and black fruit paired with notes of violet and earthy undertones are expressed in the elegant Musigny and Clos de Vougeot.

Each wine from Domaine Georges Roumier is a masterpiece, meticulously created to reflect the essence of its stunning terroir. These wines age with grace, evolving into true masterpieces over time. Roumier truly embodies Burgundian winemaking at its finest.

Domaine Georges Roumier Terroir

When talking about Burgundian wines it is nearly impossible to ignore one very important factor: Terroir! In Domaine Georges Roumier’s case, the terroir should not only be talked about, but it should also be praised at the top of your lungs!

The soils of Chambolle-Musigny are a mosaic of limestone, marl, and clay. This unique combination imparts a delicate minerality and a strong sense of terroir to the wines. Musigny, with its ancient limestone soils, yields grapes of unparalleled quality while Bonnes Mares combines marl and limestone for powerful and beautifully complex wines. Clos de Vougeot boasts deep, well-draining soils that contribute to wines with structure and depth, while Clos de la Bussière, a Premier Cru in Morey-Saint-Denis, reveals the nuanced terroir of its location with a balance of fruit and minerality.

The gentle slopes and ideal sun exposure contribute as well to creating the perfect environment for the Pinot Noir grape to thrive, resulting in wines that are both nuanced and expressive. Domaine Georges Roumier's terroir is a treasure trove of diversity, an eclectic mix of soils and microclimates that provides the canvas for crafting wines that are nothing short of exceptional.

Low Production and Rare Finds

Domaine Georges Roumier wines are the epitome of rarity and exclusivity. With an unwavering commitment to quality over quantity, the production of these wines is limited, making them highly sought after by connoisseurs and collectors. The low production numbers and difficulty finding these bottles ensure that every sip is an exquisite and unparalleled experience, making them a valuable addition to any discerning wine collection.

A Holiday Gem

Whether you gift one or more of these Burgundian masterpieces to a loved one or as a treat to yourself, Domaine Georges Roumier’s wines promise to enchant and create cherished moments filled with flavors of Burgundy’s best.
