Domaine de la Vieille Julienne
Located in the pristine Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has become one of the region's leading producers in a relatively short period. The estate began bottling wines in the late 1960s after harvesting and selling grapes since the 17th century. Thanks to Jean-Paul Daumen, who took charge in 1990, Julienne has made a noticeable imprint within fine wine. Known for their powerful, complex, and well-aged elixirs, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has built a minimalist machine able to stand toe-to-toe with the titans of France.
Prime Real Estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The Julienne estate has the honor of being based on the northern limits of Châteauneuf-du-Pape near the heights of Clavin. The vineyard's steep hills and cool, Mediterranean climate allow the grapes to grow very comfortably in marlstone and limestone soils. Additonal sands and red clay cover the 20-hectare vineyard, producing a perfect balance of power and finesse.
Grenache vines are Julienne's trademark, though Syrah, Mourvedre, and other Rhone varieties are also grown on the property. The vines age tremendously well in these conditions, with Grenache vines reaching an average age of 60 years and overall vines reaching an average of 50 years.
A Great Respect for the Vineyard
In being a small producer, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has a methodical approach to winemaking. Each bottle is attentively cared for and every grape is picked by hand, then considered for first or second selection. Furthermore, the entire vinification and fermentation processes are natural. The estate emphasizes a long and slow fermentation in which wines are drained away in large oak barrels. After 18 months of aging the bottling is completed- unfined and unfiltered.
Standout Vintages
Domaine de la Vieille Julienne vintages have earned high praise from the wine world over the past 30 years. Robert Parker named the estate's Cote du Rhone as "possibly the best [he's ever tasted]" while Jeb Dunnuck gave the 2017 bottle a perfect score. Citing the sweet tannins and full-bodied richness, Dunnuck praised not only the specific vintage but the Julienne estate as a whole for becoming one of the greats in Châteauneu-du-Pape.
Acquiring a bottle from this estate illustrates the mark of a true wine connoisseur; while the name may not be as high profile as its French compatriots, any savvy collector understands the true prowess of one of these bottles. Show off your cellar in style and wow the crowd when you present the finest vintages of Domain de la Vieille Julienne.
