Chateau Suduiraut

Chateau Suduiraut is one the premier sweet wine producers from Sauternes, dating back to the late 16th century when French nobleman Leonard de Suduiraut founded the prized estate. Made from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, Suduiraut wine has challenged the region's heavy hitters, such as Chateau d'Yquem and Chateau Guiraud, earning a place as a Premier Cru classed estate. Since 1992, Suduiraut has been owned by French insurance company, AXA Millesimes, who has brought in exceptional talent and innovative winemaking techniques, bolstering Suduiraut to international renown. 

Chateau Suduiraut History

In 1580, Leonard de Suduiraut married Nicole d’Allard, marking the birth of Chateau Suduiraut in the famed Sauternes region. The French nobleman purchased 200 hectares of land in the commune of Preignac, bordering Chateau d'Yquem on a prime terroir. Suduiraut quickly became a coveted wine in the region, as sweet wines represented 35% of wine consumption during this era. However, the Chateau quickly fell on hard times after the winery and vineyard were burnt down in the Fronde insurrection and was not rebuilt until the 17th century. 

Reconstruction took place under prestigious hands, as Le Norte, gardener for King Louis XIV, was enlisted for the project. Eventually, Suduiraut gained enough acclaim that it was classified Premier Cru under the 1855 Classification Sauternes and Barsac, joining 10 other estates in this status. Unlike its neighbors, Suduiraut struggled throughout much of the 20th century, with the 1970s in particular proving to be downtrodden years for the Chateau. It was not until 1992 when AXA Millesimes, owners of Pichon Baron and Domaine de l'Arlot, purchased Suduiraut that the estate regained its past prominence. Upon the takeover, Christian Seely was hired as the Managing Director and Caroline Gendry was brought in as the Cellar Master. These hires marked the beginning of a new era, and, since the 21st century, Chateau Suduiraut has elevated to a higher status. 

Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes Terroir

Chateau Suduiraut owns 200 hectares of land, 90 of which are under vine, in the prestigious Sauternes region. Around 80% of the vineyard is planted to Semillon, 15% with Sauvignon Blanc, and 5% with Sauvignon Gris. The northernmost parcel borders Chateau d'Yquem, sharing the estate's gravelly, sandy soils. Due to the soil's low water retention, low yields are produced, and vines are planted at a high density, with 7,000 vines per hectare. The vines average age is 35 years old, and each varietal provides a unique quality to the final blend. Semillon dominates the composition, giving the wine its structure and pronounced honey aromatics and dried fruit flavors. Separately, the Sauvignon Blanc adds acidity and freshness to the blend, while the Sauvignon Gris provides subtle floral and ripe exotic fruit aromatics. 

Each harvest is done in tires, or successive passes through the vineyard. Around 150 pickers are employed to continually graze the land and choose only the best fruit for the Grand Vin. Because noble rot is used to extract the intense sweetness, it is crucial for the team to pick fruit at optimal ripeness levels. Once transported to the cellar, the fruit is pressed, fermented with indigenous yeast, then aged in 50% new French oak barrels. Vintages with higher acidity are aged for 6 months in new oak, while richer vintages are matured longer in barrels. 

Suduiraut Top Vintages

Chateau Suduiraut produces around 3,000 cases of the Grand Vin each vintage and also offers a few hundred cases of the second and third labels, Castelnau de Suduiraut and Lions de Suduiraut. Bottles have been described as solidly structured, elegant, and age-worthy, with notes of honeyed apricot, candied citrus, and vibrant acidity. 

Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes 2007

The 2007 Chateau Suduiraut is one of the estate's top vintages of the 21st century, acclaimed for its well-balanced nature, tangy marmalade notes, and charming bitterness. The bottle was rated 94 points by respected critic Neal Martin, who stated the wine was drinking well now, but will continue to benefit with further cellar aging.

Chateau Suduiraut 1989

The 1989 Chateau Suduiraut was labelled "an extraordinary Sauternes... one of the monumental efforts of the vintage" by Robert Parker. At over 30 years old, bottles are in their prime drinking window and provide drinkers with a classic sophistication of the Chateau.

Chateau Suduiraut 2001 

The 2001 Chateau Suduiraut marked the turning point in the Chateau's history, receiving the best reception in decades. The wine was rated 98 points by Robert Parker and the Wine Spectator, each noting the outstanding finesse and complexity of the bottle. As part of a tremendous vintage from Sauternes, in which the 2001 Chateau d'Yquem earned an unheard of five 100-point ratings, the 2001 Suduiraut represents the perfect investment and drinking opportunity for wine collectors.
