Castello Romitorio has gradually ascended into Italian wine stardom since its 1984 beginning. Founded by famed artist Sandro Chia, Castello Romitorio produces outstanding Brunello di Montalcino from a 16-hectare vineyard set 450 meters above sea level on Romitorio's cool-climate hills. The estate is now led by Sandro's son, Filippo, who is aiming to expand Castello Romitorio's offerings and cement its signature style.
Castello Romitorio: Italian Winery Founded by Sandro Chia
In 1984, Sandro Chia acquired land in Montalcino, comprising a manor, castle, and vineyards. Chia intended to use the land as an art studio, though he quickly realized the incredible terroir he stumbled upon. At the time, Montalcino was known as an eccentric wine region with little to no profitability. However, with Sandro Chia's determination, new Sangiovese vines were planted, and the manor was converted into a winery. The first vintage was crafted in 1987 and gained national acclaim six years later.

In 2006, the winery was then refurbished by Sandro Chia's son, Filippo, who is the current owner of Castello Romitorio. After building a new cellar and importing modern technology, Castello Romitorio wines have burst on the Italian market, now producing 16,000 cases per year.
Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino
Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino is the estate's flagship label and is created from aged vines on the high-altitude vineyard. The parcel sits 1,600 feet above sea level on Romitorio hills, set on rich galestro, clay, and albarese soils. Its Northeast sun exposure causes cooler climates in the morning, forcing the vines to produce elegant and lightly-colored fruit.
Once ripened, the fruit is rigorously selected and transported to the winery, where the final blend is aged in large barrels and French oak for 24 months. Once aged, the Brunello displays rich minerality and purity of fruit, becoming known as one of Tuscany's most elegant and refined wines.

The 2019 Castello Romitorio Brunello is the estate's greatest modern vintage, landing a place in Wine Spectator's Top 100 and rated 97 points by the publication. The wine was celebrated for its cherry and kirsch aromas, stony mineral elements, and elegant finish. Less than 4,000 cases were created, making these bottles an "insider's wine" on the Italian market.
