Wine from Bottle Shock The Movie: Montelena

The 2008 film, Bottle Shock, follows the story behind The 1976 Judgement of Paris, a blind tasting that forever changed the world of fine wine. A mix of comedy, romance, and drama, one constant is present throughout the film: wine. With stars like Chris Pine and Alan Rickman, the real showstoppers are the wine from Bottle Shock.

The major winner from the group was the 1973 Chateau Montelen bottle, which topped the white wine rankings. Four California chardonnay were pitted against six top Burgundy white wines, and the Montelena ranking helped put Napa Valley on the map and shocked critics and enthusiasts alike.

The Montelena bottling was one of the first under new owners, the Barrett family, who took over a 100-year-old estate that had long struggled after Prohibition. Under the tutelage of master winemaker, Jim Barrett, the estate produced immaculate wines, garnering intense praise and demand. Top critics like Robert Parker have lauded Chateau Montelena wines for their impeccable aging ability and flamboyant styles. The estate aims to capture the unique season each wine is grown under, never recreating a formula that succeeded in the past.

Notable vintages for the estate include the 2002 bottling, recognized by Jeb Dunnuck for possessing "two to three decades of longevity" and containing elegance, power, and concentration. Montelena is more than just a wine, it's a unique and iconic piece of history to add to your cellar.
