Over the course of several hours, the wine opens up beautifully and by the end of the dinner it is clearly the most intriguing and complete of the three. I wish I owned more of these, but this is the last. The magnum is great right out of the gate. I adore the magnum format for all wines, but Champagne in particular. This is a fabulous showing. The straight fifth is also surprisingly closed at the outset, but then blossoms quickly. At the first tasting, it is the most impressive of the three bottles but as time passes there is much less development here than in the big bottles. The blend is 55% Pinot Noir from Aÿ and 45% Chardonnay from Mesnil and Avize. This is a terrific showing. We are off to the races. Although, perhaps not quite as complex or structured as the very best P2s, the 2000 is wonderfully alluring. Interestingly, in 2000, the Blanc and P2 are not as different as they typically are. The P2 has a bit more volume and freshness than the Blanc, but both wines share a distinct toasty, slightly reductive character. Today he has four remarkable parcels, three of which are of first-growth quality. From a total of 70 acres, Abreu continues to sell much of the fruit from these vineyards to other wineries. The four vineyards include two St. Helena sites, the Cappella (6 acres) and the Madrona Ranch, which is situated on the lowest slopes of Spring Mountain. He also owns an 18 acre parcel high on Howell Mountain and a large tract of land he co-owns with Ric Forman known as the Thorevilos Vineyard, which is in the eastern hills of Napa Valley. Over the last five or six years, Abreu’s wines, which all spend about 24 months in French oak, have seen increasing amounts of Cabernet Franc added to the blend. He essentially uses only Bordeaux varietals, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with smaller amounts of Petit Verdot and Merlot. The only problem with these extraordinary efforts is their limited availability. Production remains less than 500 cases for each of the four selections, but they are about as good as it gets for Bordeaux varietals in Napa ... or anywhere else in the world. Becoming one of the top half dozen or so vineyards in all of Napa Valley is Thorevilos. The blend for this cuvee is generally an intriguing combination of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35-40% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot with just a tiny dollop of Merlot. This shows a rich nose featuring deep and ripe chardonnay and pinot noir. Red fruits, some dark mushrooms, plenty of grilled nuts, caramel, some deep spices, dried citrus, lemon peel and bready aromas are all there. The trademark complexity is here, too, and this freshens with air. The palate is intricately detailed and stitched together like needlework. It is extremely precise and even, and the acidity is articulated with some finesse, even if this has much more in terms of phenolics as the leading structural component. The phenolics are rich and ripe, and they sit polished and even around immensely concentrated fruits such as peaches, nectarines and white cherries. The finish is deep, even and resonant. Drink now but rest assured that this will hold for a very long time – just as Krug has proven in other warm years such as '76.
