Critical Acclaim:

"The 2005 Opus One, a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec, has a ruby/purple color and a beautiful, sweet nose of creme de cassis and spring flowers. Complex and medium to full-bodied, with silky tannin and superb purity and balance, this is exactly what Opus One was meant to be when it was first proposed. Of course, it is a popular wine to criticize, but the quality has never been better, and certainly 2005 is a beauty. It is reaching full maturity at ten years, but I think there is still another 10-15+ years of upside potential in this wine. It is full-bodied, opulent and, dare I say, delicious. Given its popularity and brand recognition, it's nice to know that even at a major steak house you can probably find this wine and be thrilled to buy it and drink it." RP Jun 2015

2005 Opus One | Robert Parker 95

"The 1979 Opus One emerges from the glass with pine, menthol, sweet red cherries, tobacco, dried flowers and savory herbs. Deceptively medium in body, the 1979 packs a serious punch on the palate, where it still has fabulous depth and remarkable vigor for a wine of its age. Sweet, silky tannins frame the gorgeous finish. What a great start to this tasting. Any remaining bottles need to be enjoyed now, but the 1979 remains superb. Tim Mondavi describes 1979 as a fairly normal year, with a little more rain than normal." AG June 2013

Inaugural Vintage - 1979 Opus One | Antonio Galloni

"Black cherries, plums, tobacco, incense, new leather, licorice and savory herbs take shape in the 1980 Opus One. A wine of extraordinary richness and pure power, the 1980 impresses for its depth and size. Absolutely nothing is out of place in this impeccably refined, layered wine. Cinnamon, cloves, menthol, hard candy, tar and licorice all flesh out on the rich, resonant finish. Today, the 1980 is firing on all cylinders. It remains a monument to the greatness of California wine." AG June 2013

 The Taste of Opus One

If you are lucky enough to taste Opus One, you might agree that it is a wine to enjoy soon after release as well as after a decade or more of aging.
You might even agree that there is a restrained style and firm structure in this wine.
It is redolent of 1st Growth Bordeaux, while also hinting at the opulent ripe fruit Oakville in the Napa Valley can produce.
Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi decided to form a partnership that would express the best of classic Old World Bordeaux “savoir faire” in a California “New World” region.
Robert Mondavi is often credited for bringing California’s Napa Valley fame to international recognition. Baron Philippe de Rothschild is credited for reviving the 1st Growth Château Mouton Rothschild. (1st Growth refers to the highest designation in the Bordeaux classification of 1855.)
The partnership did come to fruition, with the first vintage produced in 1979. Today Opus One is one of the most recognized brands, sold in the most important restaurants in the world.
