Bordeaux's "Diamonds in the Rough" - Super Seconds

Super Second Bordeaux wines are almost at and sometimes better than the quality of First Growths.

The term Super Second Bordeaux had not been coined yet. But it works and today, it's in common usage among Bordeaux wine collectors all over the worldSuper Second Bordeaux wines are Second Growth Bordeaux wines that are almost at and sometimes better than the quality of the First Growths. They sell for more money than the other Second Growths, but they are more affordable than the First Growths.

Looking for a "Diamond in the Rough"?

I love that phrase, especially as it is applied to fine wine. The phrase is defined as: "one having exceptional qualities or potential but lacking refinement or polish." In this case a Super Second can be considered, "An affordable, high quality Bordeaux having exceptional qualities or potential but lacking the polish of a First Growth classification from 1855!

I love data and wanted to empower you with some numbers to potentially add some affordably priced age-worthy wines to your collection. I created a column of $ per Point to give you an idea of value of your Dollar for the critics rating of quality. Keep in mind these wines are from the Left Bank of Bordeaux and to be fair, there are others in the Right Bank as well. This evaluation is based on the Left Bank Super Seconds.

Analysis & Tasting Notes Example:

93+ Points Robert Parker ~ 1999 Ducru Beaucaillou $1.99 per Point

"Medium brick colored, the 1999 Ducru-Beaucaillou needs a little swirling to release the tightly coiled notions of dried cherries, fruitcake and red currant jelly with emerging hints of balsamic, mincemeat pie, menthol, powdered chocolate and star anise. The medium to full-bodied palate is wonderfully expressive with seamless freshness lightly lifting a great core of youthful red and black fruits plus fine-grained tannins to support, finishing with lingering savory and spice layers. This well-structured spice-bomb still has a lot of years left!" Lisa Perrotti-Brown August 2020

93 Points Robert Parker ~ 1999 Lafite Rothschild $8.87 per Point

"The 1999 Lafite Rothschild is entering adolescence and beginning to show very well after an hour in the decanter. Offering up aromas of rich dark fruit mingled with cigar box, loamy soil, spices and subtle animal top notes. Medium to full-bodied, muscular and concentrated for the vintage, with lively acids and still rather youthfully assertive tannins, it's a fine effort that would rate higher if it displayed greater aromatic purity." William Kelley February 2022

You have found it here! There are several "diamonds in the rough" you can pick up for less than $2 / point. That is a more than 4x Premium for the classification of First Growth. I love collecting the First Growths but perhaps I can drink a Super Second! Now or cellar for a future celebration!
